Big House, 1940

Big House, circa 1940

This is the Big House at "Pine Apple Village" circa 1940. It is the summer home of the Apple family between the middle 1930s and early 1950s. It is located (yes, it still exists--it's just owned by different people now) in the Little Pine Creek Valley in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Charles bought a large piece of property here by simply making the tax payments during the Great Depression, in 1935.

The house remains largely the same, though it has undergone improvements and the landscaping has changed in the last 58 years.

Pine Apple Village included not only this house but a horse barn (just down the lane past the pickup truck on the left of the picture) and five cabins built by Charles and his brothers. Images of the construction of the Creek Cabin are included in the database. The Log Cabin burned down in 1970, and the Two-story burned as well two years later. The Breezeway and the Five-Story still stand, as does the Creek Cabin.
