This is the earliest image we have of Ida and J. Harvey Romig. It was taken aboard the S.S. Megantic, a cruise ship that carried Ida, Harvey, and their daughter Iva from Miami to Havana in 1928. The caption on the back of the original photograph, written in Iva's handwriting, reads: "On board the S/S Megantic, 1/18/28 On route to Havana." Edgar Romig, an elder son of Ida and Harvey's arranged the trip on Iva's behalf. In January 1928, Iva was 24 years old, and apparently in danger of becoming a spinster. Edgar thought that a Caribbean Cruise would be a good place for Iva to meet eligible bachelors. The trip was only partly successful (see next image).
Ida and Harvey look out of place, and possibly out of sorts. They were old school Pennsylvania Dutch farming folk (ancestors on Ida's side settled Pennsylvania in the mid-1700s). As such, Ida and Harvey were unaccustomed to idleness, luxury, and frivolity. Iva, on the other hand seems to have taken to it like a fish takes to water (see next image).
